Lagu iini muncul pertama kali pada tahun 1955, menjelma sebagai lagu tema dalam sebuah film berjudul “Unchained” pada tahun yang sama. Ditulis oleh Alex North dan Hy Zaret, lagu ini kemudian terkenal dan populer, banyak dinyayikan oleh para penyayi pada waktu itu. Konon lebih dari 1500 rekaman yang dibuat oleh lebih dari 670 artis penyanyi. Bahkan sekitar tahun tersebut di dua negara yang berbeda dengan versi penyanyi yang berbeda, Unites State dan United Kingdom, lagu itu selalu menempati posisi teratas. Lalu pada sekitar tahun 1965, lagu ini dipopulerkan kembali oleh Righteous Brothers dan pada tahun 1990 menjadi lagu utama dalam sebuah film berjudul “Ghost”.
